Because this blog will be dominated by football-related content for the next five months, your author has decided to make an effort to regularly post pictures his lovely and talented sister took of some of his artwork. These posts will include a brief thought or two about when the piece was made.
This week: An ink and marker design of a jersey for the Dee's Disease fantasy basketball team
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT: What held me up for the longest time in getting re-involved with fantasy sports had to be the bad luck of my first experience(s) with it. Specifically, we ran a fantasy basketball league at the restaurant I worked at some time in the late 90s. The draft and the build-up to it were honestly the best parts about the whole thing, and then my entire roster would inevitably end up getting hurt. Because this our league did not allow the luxury of adding or dropping players, you were pretty much stuck with whatever roster you drafted and thus, I was totally screwed.
The bartender at the establishment was the fellow who came up with the name for my team, and I even continued to use it in last year's attempt at fantasy basketball. I did, however, decide to retire the name this year in favor of something new—but we'll get more into that later.
Anyway, this was the jersey I designed for my team to unveil my No. 1 pick during one of those drafts. My two favorite elements to this jersey would probably be the color scheme, which was similar to the Sonics jerseys of that time (remember when they had basketball in Seattle?), and the decision to make my logo a basketball deflated by a hypodermic needle.
I also designed a home court for the team in my sketchbook, which (unfortunately) affected a piece or two that will probably get posted here at a later date.

WHAT STILL KINDA BUGS ME ABOUT IT: Seeing as this was done on posterboard, the spots where the permanent markers bled are a little obvious in the green, which annoys me. Also, the stripes for the left arm of the jersey are uneven with the ones for the right.
But probably the most shameful element of the thing still has to be the name on the back:
Yep, I drafted Anfernee Hardaway—twice. I'm assuming this was from either the 1996-97 season or the 1997-98 campaign, but either way, Penny's numbers never really took off after Shaquille O'Neal left Orlando quite like I'd been hoping they would. And true to the very spirit of the Dee's Disease franchise, he struggled to stay healthy both years I drafted him—and pretty much the remainder of his career.
I highly doubt I'll be designing a jersey for my newest "franchise," but that's for another topic.
